Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) Retire 149 Senior Officers in Dignified Ceremony
MBUYA, Uganda – July 15, 2025 – The Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) today officially retired 149 senior officers, marking the 15th batch of retirements as part of the force's ongoing personnel renewal strategy. The dignified ceremony, held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Mbuya, saw officers, including 24 Colonels, 83 Lieutenant Colonels, and 42 Majors, transition into civilian life.
Addressing the retirees, the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, urged them to make prudent investments with their retirement packages. "From here, all of you should think correctly and see where to invest your money," he advised, emphasizing the importance of sound financial decisions for their new chapter. Lt Gen Okiding also commended the officers for their selfless service, acknowledging their sacrifices in preserving national security and stability.
Each retiring officer received a Certificate of Service, a tangible recognition of their significant contributions to the nation. Major General James Kinalwa, Joint Staff for Human Resource Management, reiterated that retirement is not an end but a crucial milestone that creates opportunities for younger officers to advance within the force. "Retirement is an important milestone, not an end," he stated. "It creates space for new adventures and for you to tell your story to future generations."
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Colonel Godfrey Kalyowa expressed profound gratitude to President Museveni for his leadership and the dignified nature of the retirement process. "In the past, retirement was feared, but today it is dignified. It is now a transition, not rejection," Col Kalyowa remarked, highlighting the positive shift in how the UPDF handles its retirees. He further praised the UPDF as an institution respected both nationally and regionally, urging his fellow retirees to continue serving as ambassadors of discipline, integrity, and prosperity in their civilian lives.
The retirement ceremony underscores the UPDF's commitment to a structured and honorable transition for its long-serving members, ensuring continuity within the force while recognizing the invaluable contributions of its experienced personnel.
