16-Year-Old Student Petitions Parliament to Fund Community Organisations

Image
KAMPALA — A 16-year-old student and young media entrepreneur, Martin Luther Nyanzi, has formally petitioned the Parliament of Uganda seeking legislation that would allow the government to provide financial support to community-based organisations (CBOs) and local non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Nyanzi, a student at Kisozi High School in Buddo, believes grassroots organisations play a vital role in delivering services that complement government programmes, particularly in areas such as education, healthcare, youth empowerment and community development. Through his petition, the teenager is calling for the establishment of a legal framework that would enable Parliament to allocate funds directly to registered community organisations in order to strengthen their operations and ensure sustainability. Concerns Over Shrinking Funding In his proposal, Nyanzi highlights the growing challenges faced by NGOs and CBOs following the withdrawal or suspension of funding from major internation...

Kawempe North Legislator Elias Nalukoola Rejects NGO Funding Act Proposal

Image
Kampala — Kawempe North legislator Hon. Elias Nalukoola has rejected a proposed NGO Funding Act, questioning the logic of government-funded non-governmental organisations while they are expected to address failures in state service delivery. Speaking during parliamentary debate on the proposal, Nalukoola took aim at its proponent, activist and entrepreneur Nyanzi Martin Luther, asking, "You want the government to fund NGOs, yet you are here to help in what the government has failed to do." Nalukoola argued that NGOs exist precisely because of gaps in government service delivery, warning that placing them under direct government funding could compromise their independence and effectiveness. He stressed that NGOs should be treated as partners in development, not extensions of the state. The proposed NGO Funding Act seeks to introduce a framework through which NGOs and community-based organisations would rely more on government funding instead of foreign donor support. Supporter...

Nyanzi Martin Luther Requests For NGO Funding Act From The Twelfth Parliament

Image
Kampala – Nyanzi Martin Luther, a prominent Ugandan entrepreneur and media figure, has called on the country's next Parliament to prioritize passing legislation that would increase local funding for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). His remarks highlight growing concern over the heavy reliance on foreign aid in Uganda's civil society sector. Speaking in Kampala on Wednesday, Nyanzi, who is the founder of Apex Digital Skills and CEO of NUP Radio, said Ugandans are "tired of seeing European Union funding NGOs in Uganda yet we pay tax here." He argued that the country needs an NGO Funding Act that ensures taxpayer money also supports local development organizations. "Foreign donors have been helpful, but they shouldn't be the only source. Ugandans deserve to see their own taxes working in support of their own communities," he said. The call comes as several local NGOs continue to face financial uncertainty amid shifting donor priorities and stricter re...
